CHESTERFIELD: Popular furniture store to close

After over 24 years in business a popular Chesterfield furniture store has closed its doors.

Glynn Dale, 61, of GD Furnishing, has been trading from his showroom on West Bars since 1988.

But after the recession hit his business Mr Dale took the difficult decision to go in to semi-retirement.

He said: “It’s not been a brilliant couple of years. The recession has caught up with many firms.

“A lot of places are trading from websites now and shops such as HMV have closed because of online sales.”

However Mr Dale said his business, which offers a range of chairs, settees, dining furniture and cabinets, had not stood still and had its own website.

He will now be launching his own ‘home selection service’ which will see him visiting customers in their own home and taking out brochures to them.

Mr Dale said: “Some of my customers have said, ‘what are we going to do now?’

“A lot of my customers are older people and the feedback I was getting is they like to speak to someone in person which has made me decide to offer this service.”

He added some of his loyal customers had ordered from his shop ever since it opened.

“Some have been coming to me for the full 24 years and still order from me,” he said.

In his 24 years of trading Mr Dale said West Bars had seen many changes including the closure of the Post Office Accountant General’s Department.

He added he was looking forward to semi-retirement and starting the new venture.

“I’ve run my business by myself and I’ve not had a proper holiday in years. I only ever get one week’s holiday a year so I’m looking forward to a bit more time off,” he said.
