CHESTERFIELD: ‘I can’t move down south’, says devastated Tesco worker

Workers at Tesco’s doomed distribution centre in Barlborough have told the Derbyshire Times of their devastation.

The supermarket giant has announced it is cutting 400 jobs at its Gander Lane site and would attempt to relocate workers to two new distribution centres in Dagenham and Reading.

One employee, who did not want to be named, said it would be impossible for him to take up Tesco’s offer of relocating down south.

He said: “I can’t just up sticks and move to Reading or Dagenham – it’s definitely too far to travel.

“Like all my colleagues at the depot, I’m not happy at all – there’s an awful lot of shock and plenty of tears.

“What was wrong with the current site?”

Another worker said: “So what now, do we just end up jobless?

“I’ve been job searching already, but until I get the answer I want – ‘yes, you have the job’ – I’m worried about what is going to happen come September time.

“I’m sure I’m not the only person who feels this way.”
