Chesterfield gets set for Christmas lights switch-on

Celebrity Charlie Dimmock will be at Chesterfield's Christmas lights switch-on later today.

Celebrity Charlie Dimmock will be at Chesterfield's Christmas lights switch-on later today.

Festive cheer will sweep through Chesterfield today as the town’s Christmas lights are switched on.

Thousands of families are set to descend upon Chesterfield for the switch-on, which takes place at Rykneld Square, next to the Crooked Spire, at 4.45pm.

This year’s event will boast a traditional feel with special guest appearances from Charlie Dimmock, the Organic Fairy in the Pomegranate’s pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk, plus the man of the moment, Santa Claus, and Chesterfield’s Mayor, Donald Parsons.

There is a free Christmas competition in Rykneld Square from noon.

The lucky winner, who will be announced during the switch-on, will receive a family-of-four trip to Lapland in mid-December.

There will be a Christmas karaoke in Rykneld Square from 1pm and the Pantonic All Stars Steel Band will be playing festive tunes to help get you in the festive mood.

A number of walkabout characters will be parading around the town for the kids to enjoy.

And there is some guaranteed snow thanks to a stage show by Peak FM from 3pm.

Cllr John Burrows, leader of Chesterfield Borough Council, said: “We always get a good turn out for the Christmas lights switch-on and we’re expecting to have thousands attend again this year.

“We want to encourage people to come into Chesterfield for the switch on and to shop local throughout the whole of the festive period as it plays such an important part in keeping our town centre vibrant and is a great boost for the local economy.”
