The Post Office say that the Chesterfield branch could be relocated as part of the “biggest business transformation programme in the organisation’s history”
Following last week’s announcement that 70 of the 370 high street branches, known as Crown branches, could be closed and relocated within existing shops, the Post Office have now confirmed that Chesterfield is one of those earmarked as part of the scheme.
The Post Office stress that the move is subject to finding a new retail partner than that the new programme will not lead to closures.
“Chesterfield Crown Post Office has been identified as a branch that could potentially be partnered with a retailer,” a spokesperson confirmed.
“It will be subject to a six week public consultation to gather the views of the local community if a retailer is found. We are committed to having a Post Office branch within the area.
Crown branches are currently running at a loss of £40m a year and make up just 3 per cent of the Post Office network, with over 11,500 branches across the UK - over 3,000 of which are contained inside existing retail stores.
“We are currently undertaking the biggest business transformation programme in the history of the Post Office,” the spokesperson added. “Our overall investment will maintain the size of the network and modernise branches to meet customer needs. Crown branches are a fundamental part of our long term growth strategy and need to be brought into profit. To maintain our high street presence we will be looking to find retail partners for 70 of our branches enabling us to stay in these locations.
“The Post Office successfully works with many retail partners. We already have over 3,000 branches across the UK where customers are accessing services in this way. If no retail partner is found we are still committed to having a Crown Post Office within the area. This is not a closure programme and there are no compulsory redundancies planned as part of this strategy.”
It is hoped that moving branches into retailers allow longer opening hours where possible.
