Jubilant campaigners are celebrating after planning applications to turn a pub into a Tesco store were rejected.
Four out of six applications concerning The Crispin Inn, on Ashgate Road, Chesterfield, were turned down by town planners at a meeting on Monday.
Tesco want to turn the pub, which is owned by Enterprise Inns, into a small food store.
But more than 1,100 Ashgate residents objected to the applications and fought to retain their community pub.
They feared the shop would create more traffic and ‘drain the life’ out of the area while insisting it did not need another supermarket on online petitions.
One, Simon Redding, said: “Tesco are only in it for a quick buck and they lost which is a rarity.
“This is something that is affecting people up and down the country as pubs are turned into supermarkets.
“It’s a huge victory for us and democracy.”
The two applications that were approved for the Crispin site were for the installation of signage.
Others to install plant equipment, an ATM, make alterations and create an extension as well as disabled access ramp were rejected.
Last month Tesco announced that it was to close its grocery distribution centre in Barlborough, Chesterfield, with the loss of 400 jobs.
The firm has not yet confirmed whether it would resubmit the applications or appeal the council’s decision.
