Cancer research branch raises £4k

Cancer research branch raises £4k

Members of the Alfreton and District branch of Cancer Research UK (CRUK) have raised a staggering 4,500 so far this year.

At the end of January a Burns Night took place at Santo's Higham Farm hotel, where, with a raffle, auction and competitions - and the help of over 60 revellers - the sum of 1,300 was raised.

In early March volunteers shook buckets for two days outside the Alfreton Tesco store and generous customers donated 865.

A cheque for over 1,000 was handed to local CRUK chairman, Pam McCane-Whitney, by Pauline Cox of Newton, who - along with a team of relatives, friends and members of Newton Women's Institute - organised a concert in the village.

Last month a bridge drive at All Saints Church Hall, South Wingfield, saw 80 players take part in 32 games. Prizes were awarded to winners and 1,368 was raised.

Mrs McCane-Whitney said: "At the end of April we are collecting with buckets at Sainsbury's, Ripley, and at the end of June at Lidl, Alfreton. We are now selling tickets for an English Heritage guided tour of Wingfield Manor, including a ploughman's lunch in All Saints Church Hall, South Wingfield, on June 5. Tickets cost 15, and can be obtained by calling (01773) 832631.

"If you can help with any of these events or wish to donate please contact me on 01773 832431. We need all the help we can get!"
