Gran 'thrown from seat' in Chesterfield bus smash

Grandmother, Mavis Blood, from Staveley suffered a head injury during yesterday's serious bus crash in Brimington Road was taken to hospital to check her conditions.

When she arrived doctors told her family she had a bleed on her brain and is being kept in for monitoring.

Her granddaughter, Ellen Chapman, 19, from Netherthorpe told us: "When it happened it throw her to the front of the bus. It threw her all the way down the aisle and smashed her lips and her mouth.

"She went to hospital and there was concern because she's 70 she's high risk, and they found she's got a bleed on the brain, likely because she takes blood thinning tablets.

"They're monitoring her and hoping the bleed will sort herself out.

"I was terrified when I heard she was on the bus. We went to A&E and it turned out to be quite severe. The paramedics and the fire service were really lovely, so it's a credit to them."

Mavis is among seven people injured in the crash, with one car driver sustaining serious injuries being airlifted to hospital.

East Midlands Ambulance Service said: "We received a call at 17:09 to Brimington Road in Chesterfield. The caller reported that they had seen a collision between a bus and a car.

"A paramedic in a Fast Response Vehicle (FRV) arrived first on scene shortly followed by an ambulance crew.

"Several crews were called to support given the large number of casualties including our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) and the Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance (LNAACT).

"One patient was flown to QMC major trauma centre, one patient was taken to Chesterfield Royal by ambulance and a further 5 patients, with minor injuries, were taken to Chesterfield Royal on a bus provided by the bus company, they were accompanied by two HART paramedics."
