Glossop runners attempt 37-mile ultra-marathon

Two Glossop mountain rescuers will be running up three mountains as part of a 37-mile ultra-marathon next Saturday.

Glossopdale Harriers Alasdair Cowell and Tim Budd will be competing in the Old County Tops fell race in the Lake District as a pair.

Starting in Great Langdale, the gruelling race involves a total ascent of 10,000-feet which includes scaling Helvellyn, Scafell Pike and Coniston.

It will be the second time keen fell runners Alasdair and Tim have competed, after completing the endurance challenge in eight hours 24 minutes last year and finishing seventh out of more than 100 pairs.

This year they are hoping to finish it in under eight hours.

Construction worker Alasdair, 41, of Glossop, said: “I’ve been going on long runs up Bleaklow and Kinder. I did the London Marathon last month.

“I’m excited in a weird way. If the weather’s nice, it’ll be a grand day with great views!”

Dan Calverley, Andy Oliver, Phil Swan and John Hewitt from Glossopdale Harriers are also taking part in the ultra-marathon.
