Glossop Market was given a seaside makeover on Saturday, complete with donkey rides and candyfloss.

The Blackpool-inspired event, organised by chair of Glossop market traders Valerie Logan and stallholder Catherine Muggleton, involved all the usual stalls as well as traditional beach activities for children.

Almost 400 people joined in the fun at the municipal buildings, at the first bank holiday market in Glossop for four years.

Valerie, who runs health food stall Pure Supplements, said: “It’s always been my dream to get the August bank holiday market up and running again. It was about showcasing what the traders have to offer and that we’re approachable and affordable.”

The day featured trampolines, face painting, henna tattoo artists, live music, games and competitions such as ‘guess the weight of the leg of lamb’.

Valerie said that the idea behind the theme was to combine the “best of British” with family fun, adding that stallholders and customers embraced the day, with beach-themed attire, stalls and refreshments.

She added: “We’re aware people are finding it hard in the recession, so we just wanted to remind people we were there. I’m really happy with how it went. We’re hoping to do it again next year.”
