Women’s Institute members across Derbyshire have raised £5,000 for charity in memory of a friend who died last year.
Gill Speed was appointed Derbyshire Federation chairman in 2012 but became ill soon after.
She died last August after serving only one year. She was 64-years-old.
Members across the county decided to fundraise for the Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research Charity to acknowledge and celebrate Gill’s involvement in the WI.
Individuals took on a number of challenges including current Federation chairman Chrissie Booth who put on her running shoes for a 10k race.
Joan Rowland, president of Derbyshire Federation of WI, said: “Gill is very much missed with her cheery smile and encouraging words; she was particularly noted for her colourful clothes and in particular her stylish jackets.
“In all WI members and Gill’s friends have raised over £5,000 and Gill’s husband Alan says donations are still arriving. Gill will not be forgotten.”
