Chesterfield town centre suffered a freak hail storm today, Thursday, January 23, amidst both sunshine and cloudy skies.
The surprise storm struck about 1pm despite bright sunlight breaking through the clouds.
However, within half-an-hour Chesterfield was plunged into darkness as torrential rain gripped the town.
Concerned residents complained the hail stones were painful as they struggled to find shelter.
The Met Office had warned of heavy, thundery rain with hail and perhaps some sleet mixed in. This is expected to clear leaving sunny spells and a few showers.
Dry and clear spells are forecast for this evening leading to frost.
Increasing cloud after midnight will also bring rain into the night, preceded by sleet, according to the Met Office.
