FLIPPING good fun was had by all celebrating Shrove Tuesday.
Pancakes flew in the annual Winster Pancake Races – with twelve winners batter-ing the competition to carry ready made creations in a pan over the finish line first.
Crowds of villagers watched young and old take part in the popular event.
Pancakes are associated with the day before Lent fasting as a way to use up rich foodstuffs. At Calow Primary School youngsters had a taste of tradition by whipping up pancakes and having a go at tossing them in a pan.
“It is important that we as a church school provide opportunities for children to learn about Christian events in the calendar,” said headteacher Martin Thacker.
“As well as finding out about the history of pancakes, the children had a wonderful time using ingredients to make them.
“The real fun was tossing the pancakes and then settling down to taste them.”
