A state-of-the-art fitness suite is now open at Sharley Park Leisure Centre in Clay Cross following the first phase of a £530,000 revamp.

The new 40-station gym has been created in the former bar area of the centre, the building has been made more energy efficient and disabled access has been improved - with a new wheelchair-accessible poolside viewing area – as part of the upgrade.

Meanwhile work is ongoing to refurbish and modernise the reception area, with improvements set to be complete in September.

The fitness suite upgrade has increased the site’s capacity and means a limited number of new monthly membership places are now available, with extra places already being filled quickly.

Council leader Graham Baxter said the centre is a key site for the provision of council leisure facilities in the district.

“We want to ensure that our residents have both opportunities and choice to participate in physical activity and encourage healthy lifestyles. We are delighted that this investment has come to fruition,” he said.

“Sharley Park was already well used by the community and we are committed to investing in its future.

“The brand new fitness suite is a fantastic facility and we’ve extended the range and number of classes – together with the wider revamp this has significantly improved what the centre has to offer.”

A limited number of new Just do More! monthly memberships are now available at the centre – giving people unlimited use of the fitness suite, classes and swimming from just £26 a month (terms and conditions apply – people are asked to see www.ne-derbyshire.gov.uk/sharley-park for details).

There are also a range of discount, junior and pay and play membership options available.

“Existing members have told us they’re really impressed with the quality and range of the new fitness suite equipment they now have access to – without any increase in membership fees and charges,” added Cllr Baxter.

“We’re already welcoming many new members through the door and the new places are filling fast, so we urge people to find out what’s on offer before they miss out.”

The programme included an extensive upgrade to the centre’s heating, mechanical and electrical infrastructure to greatly improve energy efficiency – lowering running costs, as well as reducing the council’s carbon footprint.
