Fireman hurt after engine rolls over

Bakewell fire engine where it came to rest

The collision happened on the A6 road, between Taddington and Ashford-in-the-Water, about 8am on Tuesday, March 18, when it was responding to a call-out to an overturned Toyota Celica car.

The crew of four, from Bakewell station, had been travelling towards Taddington when the fire appliance left the road and rolled on to its side. The 47-year-old male driver was injured and had to be airlifted to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire by air ambulance.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service is providing support to the families of those involved and has launched an investigation into what happened.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer Kam Basi, of Derbyshire fire service, said: “Our priority at the present time is to the firefighters involved and their families who are all receiving our full support.”

Police put in road closures between Ashford-in-the-Water and Chelmorton until the appliance was moved.

Chapel-en-le-Frith firefighters attended the Toyota Celica crash at Taddington which the fire service said was dealt with “successfully”.

A Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance immobilised the seriously injured firefighter with a pelvic binder before airlifting him to hospital.

DLRAA said the seriously hurt firefighter sustained head and chest injuries and other casualties were discharged. Witnesses can call Police on 101.
