Figures released by the Department for Education show 4.8 per cent of 16 to 18–year–olds were not in education, employment or training (NEET) up to the end of 2013.

This is a drop in Derbyshire of almost one per cent since the end of 2012 when the figure was 5.7 per cent. Derbyshire County Council is now ranked joint 59th out of 151 local authorities nationally.

Councillor Damien Greenhalgh, Derbyshire County Council’s Deputy Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “This is great news for young people in Derbyshire. New rules mean all young people need to stay in education or training until they’re 18 so I’m delighted that our work with them is having a positive impact.

“Given the current economic climate, it’s never been more important for young people to get qualifications, skills and training.”

The council works with employers and training providers to offer placements and training.
