A Chesterfield factory has revived a historic family recipe - and made it through to the finals of a BBC3 programme.

Entrepreneur William Sutherland, 25, was struggling to find a job so decided to bring back his great granny’s recipe for her finest potted beef.

He established his company at Boythorpe trading estate in February and since then the venture has gone from strength to strength.

The business, run by William, his dad Alistair and cousin Anna Wild, is based on a family recipe from the 1920s.

In the 1970s the Sutherland family’s Potted Meat business was booming, with a whole range of potted meat spreads in all the supermarkets but by the end of the 1980s the family had sold the business.

Anna, of Chesterfield, said: “Our family made potted beef for many years and Will decided he was going to have a go at making the original recipe.

“It has never been produced before because it was too expensive to make.”

The company entered television’s Be Your Own Boss, which has been looking for the best new British business, and made it through to the final 18 out of 7,000.

Granny Mary’s Finest Potted beef is a 85 per cent pure beef product made with real butter and a secret blend of spices and can be found in local farm shops.

Anna said: “We were a bit nervous about how we would come across on television but it showed us in a really positive light.

“To get this far has been unbelievable and we are very proud of where the product has taken us so far and we are really excited about what the future holds.”
