A FAMILY has been cherry picked to officially reopen a pub – following a £240,000 revamp.

The Swindell family from Unstone unveiled the new look at Fayre and Square pub the Chequers on Saturday.

They were chosen by the pub on Ecklington Road after an appeal was put out for a family to come forward to be named the Chequer’s Family of the Year.

The Swindells; mum Ashleigh, dad Sean and their six-month-old son Finley, were given the title as recognition for Sean’s support and commitment as a volunteer Community First Responder for St Johns Ambulance.

First Responder volunteers are trained to attend emergency calls and provide care until the ambulance arrives.

Sean has helped the pub on numerous occasions over the past year when guests have required paramedic assistance.

Chequers general manager Darren Lines said: “Sean and his family are the prefect choice to be our Family of the Year. Sean does an incredible job as a volunteer First Responder for our community and he more than deserves some recognition and reward with his family.”

The Swindells have also been put forward for the nationwide competition to be crowned Fayre and Square’s Family of the Year, which will conclude in June 2012.

A free family fun day was held at the Chequers with activities such as face painting, jugglers and balloon modellers, to mark the reopening.

The pub has also launched a new menu which offers an array of dishes including The Mighty Fisherman’s Feast, barbecue bucket and slow cooked shoulder of lamb.
