Family butcher crowned champ at pork awards

A family butcher won two awards on the trot only to come out on top at a pork award.

Robin Maycock Family Butchers and Bakers, in Holloway, walked away with the coveted Category Champion title in the Speciality Pork Product class in the East Midlands Pork Product Excellence Awards.

The firm impressed judges with its cherry glazed ham.

Owner Robin Maycock said: “This is a family recipe that has been handed down to my children from my wife, who is now retired. It really is a party piece as it looks fantastic and tastes delicious.

“We glaze the ham with orange and mustard, and decorate with cherries and cloves. The quality of the pork is obviously important and we source this from a family–run abattoir that sources local pigs. We have some exceptional pig farmers in the region so we know we are getting a quality product.

“We have entered these awards before and have done very well in the past – we have previously been crowned champion, which is testament to the quality of the products we offer. Winning these awards is really useful because we can highlight our success in our advertising and promotional fliers. It’s also an opportunity to get feedback from experts in the industry so we can fine tune our offering.”

Robin Maycock also won in the speciality pork sausage category with a roast ginger and spring onion pork sausage.

EW Coates Butchers, in Two Dales, also walked away with several awards – winning in the pork burger category, speciality pork sausage category, traditional pork sausage and young sausage makers classes.

Claire Holland, of BPEX which organises the awards, said: “We were delighted to see such a great turnout from butchers in the region – 341 entries from 51 butchers is a great result.”
