There will be an extra hour’s fun at this weekend’s Whaley Bridge Rose Queen Festival, as the parade gets underway earlier than usual.

Saturday’s event offers something for all the family, with the procession starting from Canal Street at 1pm.

Featuring music from four bands, the procession will pass along Market Street to Horwich End, returning by Old Road, and this year’s Rose Queen Annabel Wilde, who is retiring after two years, will have a place of honour in the parade with her retinue Princess Amelia Carden-Howe and her sister Harriet, a petal, alongside attendants Sophie and Oliver Edwards and Jessica and Millie Carter.

After the procession, the fun continues at the bowling club, with one of the highlights of the afternoon set to be a flypast by an RAF Hurricane at 2.30pm.

Tim Mourne, chair of the Rose Queen festival, said: “Our packed day goes on as usual until late afternoon, so that earlier start gives everybody an hour’s extra fun. All we want now is a repeat of the fabulous weather from last year.”

He added: “In a year marking the 100th anniversary of the start of World War One and the rededication of Whaley Bridge’s own war memorial, it is fitting and a privilege that we have secured another flypast.”

Displays by the Billerettes, Chesterfield Musketeers and Northenden Pipe Band, fairground rides, stalls and an artificial cave are among the attractions also taking place on Saturday afternoon.

The fun continues throughout the week with a well dressing blessing at the canal basin on Sunday at 2.30pm, the annual pet show at the bowling club at 6.30pm on Wednesday and a family sports day at Whaley Bridge football ground on July 6.
