Derbyshire may soon have four solar ‘farms’ under plans submitted by Derbyshire County Council.
All of the sites are on county council-owned land, including former colliery or low-grade agricultural land in the North East and Amber Valley areas of the county.
The four farms would be situated on land at Mansfield Road in Temple Normanton, at the former Williamthorpe Colliery in Holmewood, on Westthorpe Hills in Killamarsh and on reclaimed land at Swanwick Colliery. Councillor John Owen, deputy cabinet member for highways, transport and infrastructure, said: “These sites are not currently being put to their best use so if they get the go-ahead they offer great potential to generate a good income for the council and so help protect services.
“Generally, these proposed sites are already screened off in out of the way areas that aren’t overlooked and largely they tend not to be of much environmental interest.
“In some cases they could provide a good opportunity to improve the local conservation.”
