NEW MILLS School is setting the standard for sustainable development.

It is one of 40 schools in the country working with Solar Schools and the charity 10:10 to bring sustainable energy to its students.

The school aims to raise £12,000 by April to install a large photovoltaic array on one of its roofs.

School governor Maggie Cole, a director of the Torrs Hydro in New Mills, said: “The School Energy Team and others have wanted to install a visible commitment to renewable energy generation and energy efficiency since 2009.

“We feel it is important to model these changes for our young people and for the community.”

Anyone interested in helping the school achieve its goal can do so via www.solarschools.org.uk/newmills.
