DUNSTON: Walking group’s five-mile ramble to South Wingfield

Maureen and Ian Barge led 33 members of Dunston Walking Group on a five- mile walk. Starting from Alfreton St Martins Church leaving via the churchyard and onto Alfreton Park where they turned left up a farm track for half a mile.

The party went over several stiles and across fields onto the road at the Butcher Arms, Oakerthorpe, before entering Shaw’s Wood and up to the Anchor public House. The walkers travelled down David’s Hill coming out of Shaw’s Wood and the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust’s Oakerthorpe Nature Reserve. The group walked down to the railway line getting to South Wingfield Station House, where a vintage mobile dental hospital from London was parked.

Keeping parallel with the railway before coming out at Dale Hill, the party crossed onto muddy fields with several members sliding down the hillside, arriving at Alfreton Brook, before Brook Farm and Toadhole Furnace then stopping at the Amber Hotel for lunch.

After lunch the party continued over Shirland Golf course to Shirland to catch the bus back to town.

Next week’s circular walk will start from the Monkwood Centre before going through Sheepbridge and up to Cowley before going back to Sheepbridge.
