A DRUG addict who committed a string of thefts has been placed under house arrest at night by Chesterfield magistrates.

Gary Newton, 42, stole £112 worth of deodorant and hair products from Boots at 9.30am on July 24, after stealing Slazenger watches from Argos.

Mike Treharne, prosecuting, said: “All the stolen items were recovered. He said he had no dole money”.

Newton, of Rutland Road, Chesterfield, admitted the thefts and asked the bench to take into consideration theft of items from Boots on July 22.

He was given a 7pm-7am curfew for eight weeks and a one-year probation supervision order, including a six-month drug rehabilitation programme.

Kevin Tomlinson, for Newton, said: “Sadly, heroin is still a problem in his life.”
