A MAN caught driving after drinking more than double the legal limit told Chesterfield magistrates he had been going through hard times.

Police on patrol on the 13 bends Bakewell to Baslow road at 4.20pm on August 6 saw a Vauxhall Astra travelling at 30mph in a 50mph zone.

Driver John Power, 58, failed a roadside breath test and was arrested. He went on to give a reading of 77mcgs of alcohol in 100mls of breath – the limit is 35mcgs.

Power, unemployed, of South Place, Brampton, admitted drink-driving and was fined £125, with £85 costs. He was handed a 20-month road ban, to be cut to 15 months if he passes a drink-driving rehabilitation course. Power said: “I’ve had a bad year. I split up with my wife a year ago and it’s been a torrid old time.”
