THIS diamond couple were delighted when their sons threw them a surprise party to mark their milestone 60 year anniversary.
Violet and Ivor Turner thought they were going for a quiet family meal when they arrived at North Wingfield community centre to find it packed with family and friends.
“Everybody was there” said Violet, 77. “It was packed and we had a brilliant time.” The party was thrown by their three sons, Paul, Barry and Ian and their daughter in-laws.
“We couldn’t wish for better children” added Violet.
The Holmewood couple, who were married at Heath Church on December 22, 1950, were also joined at the party by their five grandchildren, Jane Marie, Annette, Jonathan, Abigail and Courtney, who they describe as “the light of our lives.”
Ivor, 82, a former miner at Pleasley and Glapwell, is now enjoying his retirement listening to music and supporting Chesterfield FC while Violet, who worked as a cleaner at Williamthorpe Colliery enjoys bingo and reading, and dancing when she can.
And what is the secret to their happy union? Violet said: “You have your ups and downs, but we have been married 60 years. You can’t pack up, you have to make it work.” SP94385
