Police are investigating after intruders crashed their way into the Headway shop on Market Street, Heanor, sometime between the store closing at 5pm on Sunday, November 27, and the manager returning on the following Monday morning.

Disheartened volunteers were left to pick up the pieces after the offenders gained access by smashing through the roof to ransack the shop, leaving the charity hundreds of pounds out of pocket.

Rather than stealing from the charity, which helps people rebuild their lives following brain injury, the bumbling burglars took nothing and instead left behind a £5 note on the shop floor.

The intruders even took the time to carefully remove the roof tiles in order to prevent being heard by residents in the surrounding flats.

Diane Hatton, manager of the Headway shop, said: "While all donations are gratefully accepted, £5 will unfortunately not cover the £1,000 worth of damage caused by the intruders.

"We are all absolutely devastated.

"It is difficult to believe that someone could be so cruel as to vandalise a charity shop.

"It is bad enough that the break-in has put strain on the shop's funds – but it's even more disheartening to think that the roof will have to be replaced with money that should be spent on helping people affected by brain injury.

"Our customers have be so supportive and we are determined to bounce back from this demoralising incident.

"We guarantee a very warm welcome to anyone who would like to support us by volunteering or making a now much-needed donation."

Anyone wishing to support Headway is welcome to call Diane on 0177 3710 121 or visit the charity shop at 17 Market Street, Heanor.
