DERBYSHIRE Times’ £25,000 Ashgate Hospice Appeal is urging people to join the growing number of big-hearted hospice volunteers as preparations begin for a busy 25th anniversary year of fundraising and support for seriously ill patients and their families.

The hospice, on Ashgate Road, Chesterfield, operates every year with about 370 volunteers in more permanent positions but there can be as many as 900 who step into the breach over 12 months in a variety of different ways.

Alison Ward-Foster, corporate and events fundraiser, said: “For our many events which raise hundreds and thousands of pounds we’re always eager to get as many volunteers to help as possible because these activities would not go ahead without this kind of support.

“In addition, none of our nine shops could function without the 30 to 40 volunteers who regularly support us and we always welcome those willing to help with money collections.”

The hospice estimates that volunteers save the charity over £400,000 a year in salaries so that more money can go towards caring for its patients and their families.

Volunteers in essential roles help with serving meals and drinks, work on reception and the ward reception desk and in the day centre providing companionship for patients.

Other roles include bereavement support and putting up stalls, marshalling and registering participants during events like the Midnight Walk and the Derbyshire Times bike ride.

The hospice’s board of directors are also volunteers and bring their own skills to help the charity.

Volunteers will soon be receiving packs outlining the ways they and others can contribute as the months unfold during 2013.

Alison added: “A lot of people volunteer because they have had relatives cared for at the hospice and their contribution helps them give something back and can keep a strong link to a lost, loved one.”

Those interested in becoming volunteers with Ashgate Hospice during its 25th anniversary are urged to call Community Fundraiser Debbie Fennell on (01246) 568801 or email for details.

One of the next hospice events is the Woofs and Wellies Sponsored Dog Walk around Linacre’s Three Reservoirs, on Sunday, March 17. All dogs are welcome to take part in the 4.5mile trek. For information please visit or call (01246) 567250.
