Caring Margaret was a nurse between the ages of 15 and 69 and worked at Whittington Hall Hospital, Chesterfield, looking after people with learning difficulties.

The 70-year-old, who is married to Terence and has three children and five grandchildren, said: “I got the invite on June 7 – my birthday. It was the perfect, perfect present. I’d like to say a big thank you to my lovely daughter, Melanie, who nominated me.

“I feel so humbled, so excited and a little bit nervous about the party. I’ve had such a wonderful, extremely rewarding career – I do miss it – and it’s fantastic to be honoured like this.”

Also on the guest list is big-hearted couple Peter and Ethel Lawrence, from Harehill Road, Grangewood. In their spare time, Peter, 69, and Ethel, 70, post parcels to troops in Afghanistan to help boost morale. Since 2008, they have sent more than 3,100 boxes of toiletries and treats. Ethel said: “These parcels mean so much to our troops. And we’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who helps us.”

She added: “We can’t wait for the party. We were nominated by a mystery person. If they’re reading this, we’d like to say a great big thank you – you’ve made our day.”

The couple, who have three children, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, are to hold a fundraising event at New Whittington Social Club, on Wellington Street, New Whittington, at 7pm tomorrow, where they will be raising funds to buy items for the parcels.

The Queen’s Garden Party is attended by the monarch and the Duke of Edinburgh and thousands of guests can enjoy tea, music from bands and a walk around the gardens of Buckingham Palace.
