MORE than 3,000 people applied for just 85 jobs at the new Debenhams store in Chesterfield.
The multi-million pound outlet is scheduled to open on September 20.
And manager Natalie Collins admits they have been inundated with job-seekers.
She said: “We’ve just started the screening process and have had so many applicants.
“The majority are from the Chesterfield area.”
The long-awaited store, on the former Focus DIY site on Ravenside Retail Park, will be the 169th Debenhams in the UK.
Natalie, 34, of Mansfield, said: “Everybody seems to be looking forward to it opening and I’m always being asked about it.
“People can see it is nearly ready and they can’t wait to see what it offers.”
She added: “Customers appreciate how many services we offer such as personal shoppers and ordering online and collecting from the store.
“Even though it is a reasonably small store it will offer everything.”
Designers will include Henry Holland, Jasper Conran, Julien Macdonald and John Rocha.
The store will also have Jon Richard jewellery, Tripp Luggage, Phase Eight and Wallis.
Natalie, who joined Debenham’s last April and has worked in retail since leaving school, said: “I’m really looking forward to it. It will draw more people in to the town.
“It’s what Chesterfield needs.”
The Derbyshire Times has teamed up with Debenhams to offer two lucky readers a VIP personal shopper experience.
