Date for closure of Clay Cross job centre announced

The latest from our newsroom.

Clay Cross will lose its job centre at the end of the month, the Government has announced.

The town's Jobcentre Plus on Bridge Street is to close on Friday, October 27.

Claimants in Clay Cross will have to travel either seven miles to Chesterfield job centre or five miles to Alfreton job centre.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) will be able to reimburse travel costs for claimants.

Earlier this year, Bolsover job centre shut and its services transferred to the Staveley branch.

A DWP spokesman said the Government had decided to close Clay Cross and Bolsover job centres because of 'low usage' at the sites and added no jobs would be lost with all staff relocating.

In total, 87 job centres in the UK have been earmarked for closure.

The DWP spokesman said the changes will save more than £140million a year over the next decade and will offer better value for taxpayers.

They added: "The way DWP services are delivered has changed significantly in recent years.

"For example, eight out of ten claims for Jobseeker’s Allowance and 99.6 per cent of applicants for Universal Credit submit their claims online.

"Since 2010, 2.7 million more people are in work, youth unemployment has fallen by 366,000 and the employment rate is at a record high."
