CROMFORD: WI hears about the allure of Japan to visitors

Joint President Margaret Woodcock welcomed members and several visitors to the July meeting of Cromford WI.

June had seen members attending lots of events, a walk in Bonsall, a swishing evening and a day trip to Sudbury Hall with a guided tour of the house including areas not usually seen by the general public.

There will be a knit and natter afternoon on Wednesday, July 17. A picnic has been arranged on August 20, with members encouraged to bring their own food and drink. A fundraiser is planned on Saturday, October 26 at the Methodist Church, Cromford - soup and roll with swishing. A team is to be entered into the county quiz on Friday, September 6 and also the Ilkeston WI quiz on August 13. An outing to JCB with afternoon tea has been booked for Tuesday, November 5 and the federation meeting will be held on October 1 with Prue Leith the main speaker as well as the autumn group meeting on November 7, when the speaker will be Charles Hanson.

Following the business part of the meeting, Janet Chambers, in Japanese dress, gave a very enlightening talk about her visit to Japan. Her slides gave everyone an insight into the customs and sights to be seen in this fascinating country. Stunning views of Mount Fuji, Temples, Geisha girls, wonderful food, quirky customs in hotels and her own personal experiences made the evening very enjoyable. At the end of her talk Janet chose the winners of the competition to make something from folded paper.

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 4, in the Cromford Institute at 7.30pm when there will be a talk entitled “Lady Fenton” Royal Visits of Derbyshire and there will be a competition for royal memorabilia.
