Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard on Monday how Lewis Mawby, 18, of Hedley Drive, Brimington, Chesterfield, and a 17-year-old, from Chesterfield, who cannot be named for legal reasons, went on a wrecking spree.

Prosecuting solicitor Becky Allsop said: “Witnesses heard the sound of smashing glass and went out and saw two youths walking up the road and saw one taking a running kick at a wing mirror.

Police were contacted and CCTV was observed and police saw the defendants close to a nearby petrol station. It was mindless vandalism to vehicles.”

Mawby and the 17-year-old both pleaded guilty to causing criminal damage to the wing mirrors of seven vehicles in the cul-de-sac after the incident in November.

Defence solicitor Paul Metcalfe, representing Mawby, said Mawby is of previous good character and is well thought of by his family.

Mr Metcalfe told the court: “He had had a night-out with a pal. If you understand what was consumed it gives some explanation as to what happened because they both consumed far too much alcohol.

“It started off as a prank and it escalated. Mawby immediately accepts culpability and he has learned a harsh lesson and realises he cannot take that kind of alcohol.”

Magistrates described what happened as “stupid” and adjourned both the 17-year-old and Mawby’s cases for sentencing at Chesterfield magistrates’ court.

The 17-year-old’s case was adjourned until Tuesday, February 4, when he was sentenced to a six month referral order with assessments. He was also ordered to pay compensation. Mawby’s case was adjourned until February 6 for sentencing.
