WHITWELL: Crews rescue girl marooned on an island

FIREFIGHTERS rescued a girl who got trapped on an island surrounded by water at a quarry in Whitwell.

The 14 year-old was found stranded and surrounded by 150 metres of water at Steeley Quarry, near Steeley Lane, Whitwell, about 9pm, on Tuesday, May 7.

A Derbyshire fire service spokesman said: “The girl was marooned on an island at the lagoon and was 150metres away from the water’s edge and was unable to swim to safety.”

Matlock, Chesterfield and Staveley firefighters used an inflatable float to rescue the girl and paramedics were on handed to treat the girl.
