Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard how Stanley Hugh Codd, 87, of Dale Road North, Darley Dale, Matlock, was fined £415 for causing the death of passenger Hilda Mary Codd by driving without due care and attention.

Mr Codd was involved in a head-on collision between his Toyota Yaris and a Peugeot 306 on the A6 Dale Road North, at Darley Dale, at about 3.45pm, on June 11.

Seven people had to be freed from the cars by firefighters and six were taken to Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital following the collision.

At the time, Derbyshire Constabulary confirmed some of the injured were reported to have suffered “life-changing injuries”.

Police said there were three people in the Peugeot and four in the Yaris - including three elderly people.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed at the time that firefighters freed all seven people by 4.50pm and the road was reopened several hours later.

The court stated the case involved an “extremely sad offence” and owing to the circumstances magistrates imposed a fine because they felt a community order would not be an appropriate sentence.

Codd, who pleaded guilty to causing the death of Hilda Mary Codd by driving without due care and attention, was also ordered to pay a £41 victim surcharge and £35 costs after the hearing last Tuesday.

He was also disqualified from driving for five years.
