Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard how Anthony Webb, 25, had been outside Best Kebab, on Holywell Street, when the owner heard a bang and discovered Webb had smashed his sign.

Prosecuting solicitor Robert Carr said: “There was damage to an illuminated sign outside Best Kebab shop in the morning.

“As the owner was cleaning there was a commotion outside and as he looked out he could see or hear a loud bang and saw Webb punch the sign.

“Webb then collapsed on the ground. Webb offered to pay for the damage but police arrived after being called and he was taken to hospital due to an injury he sustained after he punched the sign.”

He told police he had been drinking in a Chesterfield bar and was with a friend and a comment was made to him which he didn’t like and in frustration he ended up punching the sign.

Mr Carr revealed that Webb had been drinking for about 12 hours at the time of the incident and he took his anger and frustration out on the shop and caused £350 of damage.

Webb, of Nora Street, Cardiff, pleaded guilty to causing damage after the incident on November 29.

Defence solicitor Julie Page said: “Mr Webb accepts he had been out and had been drinking excessively and there had been an argument and he punched the sign without regard for the consequences.”

She explained he had tried to arrange to pay for the damage and showed remorse. Magistrates sentenced Webb to a conditional discharge for 12 months. He was ordered to pay £350 compensation, £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
