A thug who shot a woman with a BB gun outside a bank in Buxton town centre has been jailed for 12 weeks.
Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard on Thursday, March 26, how Gareth Tailby, 27, was taking pot shots from a window at the closed-down Grove Hotel when he shot the woman as she approached the nearby Nat West Bank in Spring Gardens.
Prosecuting solicitor John Cooper said: “The complainant went to the Nat West bank and as she reached a step she felt something hit her on the back of her head. It didn’t cause her any pain but it shocked her.
“As she turned she could see several BB gun pellets on the ground and thought she had been hit by one of them.
“A lady from the bank approached her and the complainant then heard something hitting a door frame and her attention was drawn to a window at the nearby hotel where she could see a gun poking out.”
Police were alerted and they searched the Grove Hotel where the defendant was found.
Tailby, of Globe Street, Liverpool, pleaded guilty to assault after the incident on March 21.
Defence solicitor Julie Page said Tailby had been visiting Buxton and had been at the abandoned hotel where his friend had been staying and he said he had bought the BB gun to mess about.
She added he fired it out of the window but had claimed he had not fired it anyone deliberately.
Tailby, who has previously committed 110 offences, also pleaded guilty to stealing a coat on December 19, last year, from a Marks and Spencer store in Buxton.
Miss Page added: “He has an unenviable record but his offences are mainly for dishonesty and he has no previous convictions for assault.”
Magistrates sentenced Tailby to 12 weeks in custody for the assault and two weeks in custody for the shop theft to run concurrently. He was also ordered to pay an £80 victim surcharge.
