COURT: Court Case

A thug who attacked a man in a Chesterfield town centre bar has been sentenced to a community order with 80 hours of unpaid work.

Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard how Scott Colley, 36, of Spital Lane, Chesterfield, punched Luke Slater after he tried to break up a row between his friend and Colley in the Back to the 90s Bar.

Becky Allsop, prosecuting, said Luke Slater’s friend was talking to door staff when the defendant told him to shut up or he would take him round town and Mr Slater’s friend was heard to say, “I bet you a tenner you don’t”.

As Mr Slater tried to separate the two, Colley caught Mr Slater with a fist, according to Mrs Allsop. Colley pleaded guilty to assault after the attack in July. Elizabeth Roley, defending, said Colley had aimed to defend himself from an anticipated attack. Colley must pay £100 compensation, a £60 victim surcharge and £85 costs.
