A thief was caught by police with a bag full of £116 worth of sports clothing which he had stolen from a shop display.
Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard on Wednesday, March 4, how Ivan Edwards, 37, of Leamoor Avenue, Somercotes, Alfreton, targeted the Aldi store at Somercotes.
Prosecuting solicitor Becky Allsop said: “Police were patrolling and wanted to speak to Edwards regarding a separate matter.
“He ran behind a medical centre and he had a bag with products.
“Officers went to the Aldi and discovered the goods in the bag had been on display outside the store.”
Edwards, who has previous convictions for dishonesty, pleaded guilty to the theft which happened on February 5 and admitted failing to surrender to the court on March 3.
Defence solicitor John Last said: “He has no income because his benefits have been stopped. He admits having a drugs problem and this offence was committed partly because of drugs.”
Magistrates adjourned the case until March 9 to consider probation reports before sentencing.
