A shoplifter was fined after he was caught stealing food from a South Normanton supermarket.
Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard how James Phillips, 53, was seen by staff at a Nisa store in South Normanton stealing tomatoes and he was also found to have stolen cheese and previously yoghurt.
Becky Mahon, prosecuting, said Phillips was stopped by staff after picking up tomatoes, and cheese was also recovered and he had also stolen yoghurt on the previous day.
Phillips, of Common Road, Huthwaite, Sutton-in-Ashfield, pleaded guilty to theft of tomatoes and cheese, committed on May 30, and theft of yoghurt, committed on May 29. He also pleaded guilty to possessing a bladed instrument in public. Matt Evans, defending, said Phillips had depression and had been using a knife for gardening. Magistrates fined Phillips £110, and ordered him to pay £85 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.
