Chesterfield Magistrates’ Court heard on Tuesday how Gareth Tailby, 27, formally of no fixed address, stole clothes from Lomas Stores, in Buxton, and committed four more thefts before his capture.

Prosecuting solicitor Sarah Haslam said - during a previous hearing - that Tailby originally went into Lomas Stores and stole a top and trousers and put them on. Ms Haslam added that Tailby was spotted leaving the store on CCTV footage.

Tailby struck at the store again, according to Ms Haslam, and stole jogging bottoms. The court heard how Tailby went on to commit three more thefts in Glossop including stealing two DVD players and DVDs from a Co-op, a TV from a Tesco and a DVD player from a Tesco. Ms Haslam explained Tailby was arrested after the theft of the DVD player at Tesco and police discovered he was living in a tent at Glossop.

Tailby, who has 63 previous convictions for 118 offences, admitted committing the thefts between June 10 and July 1. District Judge Andrew Davison said there had been an issue with a drug called Spice which Tailby had been taking and he had been stealing to feed that habit. Mr Davison considered a suspended sentence while efforts were made to secure accommodation for Tailby.

Tailby was sentenced to 24 weeks of custody suspended for 12 months with thinking skills and rehabilitation activities. He must pay £233 compensation and a £180 court charge.
