Police are reminding residents to be wary of cold callers at their homes following suspicious incidents in Eckington.

It follows reports of three men going door to door on Stead Street and asking residents if they needed any construction work, roofing repairs and also, in one incident, if the homeowner was selling their caravan.

One man was said to have been wearing a high visibility jacket and it is thought the group was seen in the area in a silver-coloured van.

Community Safety Inspector Russell Dakin said: “While it is not thought that anyone agreed to have any work carried out on this occasion, we would take the opportunity to remind residents to always be wary of strangers who call at homes unexpectedly.

“Our advice is that if you think you need work carrying out then contact a few reputable companies and ask for quotes and to avoid answering the door to anyone who turns up unannounced.

Insp. Dakin added: “We’re pleased that residents reported their concerns to us as there have been cases where residents have been charged high prices for low quality or unnecessary work, with older or more vulnerable people being more likely to be targeted.

“If you feel suspicious of a caller then contact the police as soon as possible so that officers can make checks. Even if the caller turns out to be genuine, it is better to make that call for your own peace of mind and to ensure our area stays safe.”

Residents are encouraged to take the following steps to avoid becoming a victim of doorstep crime:

If you are not sure who is at the door, don’t open it.

Check the identity of any caller. Confirm who they are by calling the company they work for using number from the telephone directory or a bill.

Ask a neighbour to come around to check them before you open the door.

Tell them to come back at a time when someone will be at home with you.

Keep doors and windows locked and use the door chain every time you answer the door.

Call the police immediately if you feel intimidated, they are suspicious or won’t go away when asked to.

To contact Derbyshire police call 101 except in an emergency when the number is always 999.
