Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard on Friday, July 18, how Shaun Lander, 54, of Beech Way, Danesmoor, Chesterfield, was seen wearing only his shoes and a hat as he stood by the Morton section of the Alfreton railway line.

Becky Allsop, prosecuting, said that during a separate incident, a stunned wildlife photographer also spotted and took images of Lander masturbating which were handed to police.

She said: “British Transport police received complaints from train passengers of sightings of a male exposing himself. He had been seen naked wearing only shoes and a hat close to the rail line.

“In respect of the second offence, a wildlife photographer was taking photos and zoomed in to get the shock of his life and saw the defendant naked and masturbating. He described taking a picture of a male wearing a tracksuit and these images were handed to police.”

Officers were able to identify Lander from the images as a man they had seen running from Clay Cross to Alfreton and he was interviewed and he admitted committing both offences.

Mrs Allsop added: “The defendant told police he did it to relieve himself and he didn’t have a target audience.”

Lander pleaded guilty to two counts of exposing himself after the incidents in January and March.

Julie Page, defending, said Lander, who is of previous good character, fully admitted the offences at the first opportunity. She added: “He has no explanation or understanding of what caused him to behave this way but has been to a GP to understand it.”

Magistrates adjourned the case until August 8 to consider probation reports before sentencing.
