Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard on Friday, October 10, how Craig Kerry, 39, of Shamrock Place, Mastin Moor, stole the camera from his boss Nicholas Hyman’s car.

Prosecuting solicitor Ian Shaw said: “When Mr Hyman went to charge up the camera he noticed it was missing and it was discovered Kerry had taken it and sold it to a shop called CeX for £37.

“Kerry had been working for Mr Hyman who had been receiving care from Kerry and this theft was a breach of trust.

“The defendant said he was short of cash for rent and took the camera and when the rent was dealt with by other means he kept the camera and sold it when the rent problem reoccurred.”

Kerry was identified by a sales document linked to the camera sold to the CeX shop. The defendant said he had taken the camera to sell so he could deal with rent difficulties.

Kerry pleaded guilty to the theft which happened on September 26.

Defence solicitor Rebecca Meadows said Kerry thoroughly regretted his actions because he and his partner have a daughter and his partner is due to give birth to another child.

She added that he was struggling to get things for his and his partner’s child and was struggling to pay for rent and food when he saw the camera and stole it.

Ms Meadows said Kerry immediately regretted stealing the camera and despite several attempts to return it to the car he eventually sold it on.

The court heard Kerry has previously committed crimes motivated by the misuse of drugs but the theft was not drug-related. Magistrates sentenced Kerry to a £73 fine and ordered him to pay £85 costs and £20 victim surcharge.
