A driver filled up with fuel and drove away from a petrol station near Chesterfield without paying because he had been struggling for money after losing his job.

Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard on Friday, October 10, how Matthew Dobb, 31, of Mansfield Lane, Calverton, had pulled into the petrol station at Junction 29a of the M1 motorway before filling up with £40.01 of fuel and driving off without paying.

Prosecuting solicitor Ian Shaw said Dobb accepts the theft was premeditated because he did not have any money.

Dobb pleaded guilty to making off without payment after the incident on August 23.

Rebecca Meadows, defending, said Dobb had previously been forced to resign from his job and also had personal difficulties because he had split up with his fiancee.

Magistrates fined Dobb £37 and ordered him to pay £85 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.
