Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard this month how David Guest, 30, had been driving between Junction 29A and Junction 30 on the northbound carriageway of the motorway when a spot check recorded his speed at 80mph.

Angela Hadfield, prosecuting, told the court there was a temporary speed restriction in place and the defendant was driving in excess of that limit in December.

Guest, of Cheltenham Road, Leicester, said he was having a bad time with a relationship and drove to get away. He argued there were no other cars around but accepted he must have seen the 50mph sign.

Guest, who pleaded guilty to speeding, was fined £175 and ordered to pay £35 costs and a £20 victim surcharge. He was given six points on his licence.
