Curfew order after unprovoked attack

A Glossop man has been given a curfew after punching a man twice in an unprovoked attack.

Mordecai Williams was stood outside Norfolk Pizza in Glossop in the early hours of March 30 eating a kebab, High Peak Magistrates’ Court heard. He was then punched on the left side of the face to the jaw area by Joseph Collins, prosecutor Jennifer Fitzgerald said. Collins walked off but was challenged by Mr Williams. He then walked back towards him and punched him a second time just below the eye.

In interview, Collins said he couldn’t remember what happened because he was too drunk.

During a search at the police station, officers found 0.28 grams of cocaine in Collins’ possession, Mrs Fitzgerald added.

Collins, 24, of Queens Street, admitted possessing a class A drug and assault by beating.

Joanne Black, defending, said: “He had been out with his girlfriend and had consumed alcohol but he doesn’t put that forward as an excuse. He does accept responsibility for this but he does feel that influenced his behaviour at the time. He has very little recollection of what happened.

He is embarrassed to be here again, he is ashamed by his actions.

“The cocaine was a small amount with a street value of approximately £10. He hadn’t taken any that night and doesn’t want to be going down that road again.”

He was given a community order with a curfew from 8pm to 6am for two months. He must also pay £85 costs and a £60 surcharge. Magistrates also ordered the forfeiture and destruction of the drugs.
