Cops’ warning over spate of burglaries

Officers from the area’s Safer Neighbourhood policing team are encouraging residents to increase security to prevent thefts following three incidents on Baslow Road, Brookside and North Church Street, between December 28 and 30.

During one of the offences, between 8.30pm and 11.30pm, on Saturday, December 28, an offender gained entry through the rear door of the property and stole cash, a handbag containing a purse and bank cards.

Police are appealing for witnesses to call 101 or Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111.

PCSO Hayley Grundy, of Bakewell SNT, said: “Burglaries like this are unusual in Bakewell so we would like to encourage residents to take extra steps to protect themselves from becoming a victim.

“Making sure windows and doors are secure, even when you are in, and using ‘dusk til dawn’ light bulbs, timers and door chimes will help deter criminals.

“People should ensure they keep bags securely fastened when out and consider using a purse chain, which clips purses to handbags, or a bell attached to belongings which alerts owners if anyone tries to take them.”

Police are increasing patrols to reassure residents who are being urged to ring 101 if they spot suspicious behaviour.

Derbyshire Constabulary is offering the following advice:

Make sure windows and doors are locked when leaving the house or going to bed; Valuable items such as mobile phones and laptops are not left on display; Remove house and car keys from view of windows and do not leave them in locks overnight; Leave a light if out after dark or consider using timers and ‘dusk til dawn bulbs’.
