A BURGLAR who was caught after an eagle-eyed postman spotted him as he was breaking into a house and called police has been jailed.

Derby Crown Court heard on Wednesday, April 10, how Craig Mawby was sentenced to 32 months in prison after admitting breaking into the property on Rothervale Road, Chesterfield, on March 26.

Mawby, 30, had been seen breaking into the house at around 10am by the local postman who dialled 999, according to police, and the thief then left the house after stealing cash.

The vigilant postman followed him and stayed on the phone to police so officers could be directed to Mawby who was arrested nearby.

Mawby, of Derby Road, Chesterfield, pleaded guilty to burglary and was sentenced at Derby Crown Court. He must also pay a £120 victim surcharge.

Detective Chief Insp Sean Dawson said: “This shows the difference members of a community can make when they come together and look out for one another.

“I would urge anyone who sees anything suspicious in their neighbourhood to contact police immediately as you could be witnessing a crime taking place.”

Witnesses can call Derbyshire Constabulary on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
