Police are following several lines of inquiry after a “serious sexual assault” on a woman in the churchyard of the Crooked Spire.

The attack happened sometime between 12.30am and 12.50am on Saturday – leaving the well-known Chesterfield church taped off for most of the day as officers combed the area.

Police said the victim was a 32-year-old woman from Chesterfield.

They are hunting a suspect who is described as being a white man in his late teens or early 20s and at least 5ft 9ins maybe taller with dark brown hair. He spoke with a Chesterfield accent.

Officers said the assault appears to be an isolated incident and are urging witnesses to come forward.

They could not give details about the exact nature of the attack.

A spokesman for Derbyshire Constabulary said: “Several people have come forward with information since the appeal went out.

“We are following up that information and have lots of lines of inquiry we are currently looking at.

“However, as it is now the one-week anniversary, we would like to reappeal to anyone who was in the area and has any information that may help with our investigation to come forward.”

Anyone with information should contact Chesterfield CID on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
