A town leader has labelled vandals ‘mindless zombies’ after they desecrated a war memorial and left graffiti ‘gang tags’ around the town.
The same graffiti has been spotted at several places in Chesterfield - behind the The Range store on Lordsmill Street, on a pavement in Boythorpe and the memorial.
Police are trying to trace the people responsible for the FTP tag which could be used to send out messages to rival gangs as yobs claim territorial boundaries.
Borough council leader John Burrows said: “What kind of mindless zombies would desecrate a war memorial?”
He added the graffiti had been reported and should be cleaned and hoped police would find those responsible .
A police spokesman said: “Chesterfield Safer Neighbourhood Team is aware of the graffiti. It’s investigated as a case of criminal damage.
“If the offender is caught and the case meets the criteria for restorative justice, they are often made to clean the graffiti up. We are trying to trace the people responsible for the FTP tag and would urge anyone with information to call 101.”
